The Gray Area series in Rowe Galleries for the BFA group exhibition Eyes Wide Open, from April 14- 27, 2023.

Gray Area was influenced by the pandemic, where every day felt like the day before. Confronted with the same space, the same gray walls, and the same inescapable feeling of dread and repetition. During this time there was an immediate disassociation from the self. Purely existing and not exactly living. I wanted to document this muddled and at the same time uncomfortable period of time.

Wrapped up by the gray walls in a seemingly eternal liminal space, where the figures have merged almost entirely with the interior rooms. Gray Area acts as a window into this interior, domestic world that feels burdensome and all encompassing rather than one of solace or comfort. I use the color gray to capture the state of quarantine to process the disconnection and uncertainty felt during and afterward.
